Caribbean Plant Genetic Resources
Network (CAPGERNET)
Goal
To ensure that there is improvement in the levels of efficiencies
and higher levels of co-ordination in the utilisation and management
of plant genetic resources in the Caribbean region.
Purpose
To provide a mechanism to foster collaboration efforts for the accession,
improvement, conservation, evaluation and utilisation of crop germplasm
for the benefit of the region's farmers within environmentally sound
principles and policies.
Approach/Strategy
The strategy is to work with existing national and international
organisations that are involved in the management of plant genetic resources
to ensure regional conservation, improvement and utilisation.
Outputs
- Trained technicians, farmers and researchers in PGR management.
- Inventory of PGR activities and expertise developed, documented and
disseminated.
- Regulations documented and network agreement established on movement
of germplasm within the region and other areas of priority interest
to the region (such as genetically modified organisms).
- Trained personnel in PGR documentation system.
